Training / Workshops
To ensure that clients achieve their strategic objectives, The Barthwell Group creates and implements customized training sessions. Our training is extremely interactive and aims to engage every participant.
The Barthwell Group Approach
Our core training principles are:
The first step of any training process is to determine the results desired by the client. Training is designed to ensure a high probability of these results.
Training is designed to achieve the client’s goals and to be most effective for the trainees (taking into account, whenever possible, the background of the trainees, previous training and its effectiveness, and the trainees’ attitudes toward the goals of the training).
- Engaged, Interactive Training
We believe that the most effective training engages the trainee. Therefore, training often includes role play, interactive exercises, and other methods designed to involve the trainee.
- Best-in-Class Trainers
We leverage our Subject Matter Experts and extensive networks to recruit and offer the client best-in-class trainers.
- Efficient, Effective Training
The Barthwell Group’s goal is to ensure that the training is timely, interesting, and operates smoothly. We accomplish this through well-executed planning which considers every detail.
- Thoughtful Follow-Up
As part of our process, The Barthwell Group conducts an evaluation which includes feedback from trainees and the client and a client debriefing.
Diversity Recruitment Training for a Branch of the U.S. Military
A branch of the military wanted a new, dynamic approach which would both motivate its officer selection officers to seek out minority candidates and provide practical tools and methods to enable them to build sustainable relationships (“Diversity Pipelines”) with sources providing large pools of highly qualified diverse candidates (“HQDCs”).the trainees were relatively new in their military careers and came from a variety of backgrounds and geographic locations. Many were not comfortable building relationships with minority-focused institutions and organizations.
The Barthwell Group Solution
The Barthwell Group developed a training program focused around a creative diversity recruitment strategy: building sustainable relationships with higher education institutions and organizations which could consistently provide large numbers of highly qualified diverse candidates. In order to enable the trainees to build relationships during the session with executives from a variety of Diversity Pipelines, we developed a training team which included 17 diversity experts from around the country. The training included presentations explaining how to build Diversity Pipelines from the perspectives of the diversity experts and break-out sessions with opportunities for small group discussions and role play. Every trainee developed a personal follow-up plan during the training. Collectively, the trainees received more than 90 profiles of possible Diversity Pipelines. The training received extremely positive feedback both from the Client and the trainees.
Facilitation of a Corporate Retreat for a Fortune 500 Corporation
A Fortune 500 corporation wanted to focus senior management of a key division on engaging its workforce on organizational strategic objectives. The division was challenged by “siloism” which impeded the division’s productivity. The Client engaged The Barthwell Group to develop and coordinate the implementation of a strategy to improve team engagement and to focus the group on strategic objectives.
The Barthwell Group Solution
The Barthwell Group first assessed senior management to determine the key challenges which were impeding team engagement and optimal productivity. We then facilitated a retreat of approximately 40 key senior managers to discuss the results of its assessment. Some managers were skeptical that the retreat would accomplish a productive discussion and that it would result in impactful changes, however, the we designed and implemented was both substantive and enjoyable. Attendees participated in well-structured, focused discussions which identified the key areas where follow up was needed to advance the organization, as well as in creative, teambuilding exercises. Substantive discussions included presentations designed to assist the participants in setting goals and small groups ensured maximum participation. In addition, we designed activities to enhance teambuilding through “getting to know you” games, team exercises, and seating arrangements at meals which mixed participants from different sites and functional areas. The retreat received extremely positive feedback and successfully launched a program which led to significant results enhancing the productivity and team engagement of the organization.
Facilitation of Diversity Council Meetings for a Fortune Global 500 Corporation
The U.S. subsidiary of Fortune Global 500 corporation created a Diversity Council headed by its president and comprised of its senior business leaders in order to enhance corporate inclusion and multicultural diversity. An earlier council had not accomplished its goals, and members indicated that its meetings were not substantive. The Client wanted to ensure a different outcome for the new council.
The Barthwell Group Solution
The Barthwell Group conducted an assessment of the Council’s members in order to determine the key challenges and strengths of the corporation’s inclusion environment as well as suggestions for the focus of the Council’s work. Based on the feedback, we designed its meetings to ensure that the members received both practical information enabling them to understand the status of corporate inclusion and best practices among corporate peers and participated in developing the components for an effective strategy for the Council. The meetings were praised by the president and other Council members.
